Plot
The Battle of Alcatraz. The Worthington Siege. M-Day. Whatever you’re calling it, a month has passed since then, and the day has developed its own urban mythology.
There are rumours that the Brotherhood has reformed since being left shattered; so far this has proved nothing more than the actions of a few jumped-up nobodies, with the major players still in hiding, all supposedly living anonymous lives as ‘norms’, or conveniently ‘retired’ and doing nothing to challenge the myth that they, along with everyone else, were rounded up into the mutant camps and cured. Truth is, no one can keep track of them; the majority of those who were caught were subsequently released once they’d taken the cure following a number of cases based on the argument that if a norm could be cleared on the basis that their brain committed the crime, then they were innocent on the grounds that theirs was committed by their mutation. The argument that they were under the influence of the powerful (and conveniently now silent) Dark Phoenix also allowed several of the younger, less involved mutants to get out relatively scot-free.
The rumours about what exactly went on in those mutant camps… let’s not go there. You don’t want the nightmares. Only what happened isn’t exactly a secret. Revenge is a powerful thing, as is the belief you’re in the right, and people wanted to see justice done. Suffice to say the only real criticisms fielded were that what happened wasn’t anywhere near enough. After all, these mutants were evil….
There are rumours that the cure doesn’t work – rumours quickly silenced by the supposedly-mutant-friendly Government and its ever-trustworthy fluffy poster-boy Hank McCoy, UN Ambassador. The cure-weapons were destroyed as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ between the communities, though some claim that has more to do with how they would soon be useless anyway than anything else. The cure-centres are closed, stocks having run out following the collapse of Worthington Industries, but demand remains high and scientists are supposedly working on a new cure, though some claim they are instead developing a weapon. Few noticed, amongst the media frenzy over Alcatraz, that the issue of the MRA has resurfaced, although for the moment it remains a fringe debate.
The official line is that a new day has dawned, that mutants and humans can co-exist. Down where it matters, ‘mutant’ remains the only truly dirty word. The only real ‘truth’ is that no one really knows what’s going on, and that a storm is coming. The story is far from over, the ‘last stand’ only the beginning
Plot is member, rather than admin driven, but is likely to include MRA mark 2 and Legacy.
