Many seasons past, at the dawning of the ages, the lights and the darks existed without order. No one knew the hunter from the hunted. All creatures struggled for their place in the world without boundaries or laws. Alliances were formed and a battle was waged between the two great kingdoms. The lights and the darks.
Being both but neither, the neutrals refused to participate in the battle. When the war finally ended, a great treaty was forged at the base of the battlefield. The Treaty of the Lights and Darks.
Because the neutrals refused to take sides, the lights and darks decided their punishment would be most severe. It was decided that for all eternity, the neutrals would be banashed to the darkness of the night.
Even to walk in the suns warmth or merely peer at its glow was violation of the law.
The neutrals believed that one day they would be able to return to the sun. They called this The Promise. The fulfillment of the promise was simple, one day the neutrals would be able to walk in the light of day with the sun on their coats.
Instead of being crushed by the weight of such a unjust law, the neutrals learned to adapt to their circumstances. They developed unique skills. Their hearing increased, so they would be able to use their ears instead of their eyes. It allowed these horses of the dark the basic right to live and graze under the cover and safety of the night. They would survive.
Over thousands of years, the promise was altered and reinterpreted to provide a explanation for the unexplained.-such has humans branding horses-and hope where there was no hope.
As dark years dragged on, curious foals and horses were slaughtered by darks & lights. Soon mothers feared for there foals safety so they created storys to scare there children.
'It will blind your eyes." or
"If the suns light touches you, your body will burn."
The mothers' children feared now the golden rays, but they still harboured a secret desire:
The sun
